OR AN

AMERICAN

SCAVENGER

HUNT

On June 22, 1992, my wife and I bought our first "Passport" at the northern unit of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park outside of Medora, ND.   This started our American Scavenger Hunt. To date we have collected 243 stamps from national sites we probably would not have otherwise seen. We only found 2 or 3 disappointing sites not worth that extra mile of road.

This Web Site is our tribute to the National Park System and the fun and knowledge we have gained from it in the last few years. It is not an in-depth coverage.  It contains pictures and brief anecdotes about some of our favorite sites and of course Hyperlinks to web pages containing in-depth information for those wanting to expand their knowledge.  All the pictures are my own.

This Web Page is divided into six areas of interest.  You can navigate through the areas by clicking the buttons on the left or the headlines on the Home Page.  Of course the highlighted words are hyperlinks to that specific park or town where you can find more information.  I have tried to choose web pages other than the Park Service to provide more and different types of information.

BOOK MARK NOW SO YOU WON'T GET LOST

"IN THE BEGINNING..."

Yes, God created the Heavens and the Earth.  He is still at work and you can personally visit his creation in the making at the Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii or view the devastation caused by Mt. Saint Helens in Washington.  Then visit other sites featuring God’s Creative Power in our country.

"WHERE DID THEY COME FROM...?"

Pictograph.jpg (4588 bytes)

"… AND WHERE DID THEY GO?"  Some time between 900 and 1100 AD the Anasazi Indians, (ancient enemy in Navajo), appeared in the desert Southwest.  They scratched out a meager existence until circa 1400 AD when they suddenly disappeared.  This section is dedicated to all Native Americans who roamed this great land before the "white man" took the land for his own.

"WESTWARD HO...!"

Soldier.jpg (10720 bytes)

First they came on horseback, then in covered wagons and finally the vast New Frontier was linked by the mighty steam engine.  In the short span of 60 years the Wild Wild West was taken from the Natives Americans and turned into an energetic nation destined to lead the free world.

"GIVE ME LIBERTY...!"

Canon.jpg (6308 bytes)

…"OR GIVE ME DEATH", pleaded Patrick Henry. " WAR IS HELL", barked General George Patton.  From the Revolutionary War through the War in Vietnam, millions of Americans have lost their lives to preserve this great country.  Many sites across the land commemorate the sacrifice  of these fallen Americans.

"ONLY 15 MINUTES OF FAME?"

FDR.jpg (8892 bytes)

Yes, for most, but a few have made a career out of greatness.  Men and women have emerged out of nowhere to change the direction  of whole nations.  Politicians, writers, soldiers, inventors, and great humanitarians are revered in sites capturing a moment in their life or depicting their accomplishments for all to honor.

Not everything of interest has been set aside as a National Shrine.  Here are a few more fascinating places we found on our American Scavenger Hunt.  Hopefully these links will help you plan your next vacation or just spend some idle time on the web.  Have fun.
