OOPS!!!

The National Park System can only preserve a very small portion of the natural sites available throughout this country.  The fun of travel is finding and enjoying all the other free or commercial sites pertaining to every subject known to man.   The following are some of our favorites.  I hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

ARIZONA

SedonaH.jpg (6662 bytes)

The red limestone formations around Sedona, AZ are truly spectacular, the art galleries and studios are absorbing, restaurants fattening, and the overall atmosphere just down right fun.  Do drop in at Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.

COLORADO

RoyalGorgeV.jpg (16128 bytes)

The Royal Gorge Bridge is the world’s highest suspension bridge spanning the Arkansas River 1, 053 feet below.  It is located just west of my hometown, Canon City, CO.   Many attractions can be found in the area. It is definitely worth a visit.   Just ask for George at the Chamber Offices.

Durango – Silverton Narrow Gauge RailwayDurango, CO – View Colorado’s Rocky Mountains at their best from an authentic narrow gauge train.

FLORIDA

Kennedy Space Center – Florida – "Our Space Airport"

MAINE

L.L. Bean’s and other great stores – Freeport, ME - The L.L. Bean store was first and has four spacious floors open 24 hours a day 365 days a year.  If you don’t drop from shopping there, visit the rest of the town full of factory outlet stores.

MASSACHUSETTS

Norman Rockwell Museum – Stockbridge, MA – You knew what painting visitors were looking at by listening to their reactions.  A real emotional look at American life in the 40s and 50s.

Plimouth Plantation, Plymouth, MA – Actors play their rolls to the hilt.  You feel you are actually visiting with our founding fathers.

NEW MEXICO

Balloon.jpg (5337 bytes)

It is hard to say which is more spectacular, seeing the countryside from a hot air balloon or seeing these beautiful air ships fill and ascend during a spectacular sunrise.  We saw these beauties at a balloon rally in Las Cruces, NM.  Its worth going out of your way to see.

NEW YORK

Corning Glass Museum - Corning, NY – This is the most extensive glass museum in the world, tracing glass from the Phoenicians to the modern day.  You can also tour the Steuben Glass factory.

Baseball Hall of Fame – Cooperstown, NY – Who wouldn’t love it. It’s All American!

OHIO

Pro Football Hall of Fame – Canton, OH – A Monday morning quarterback’s dream come true!

Stan Hywet Hall (Home of the Seiberling Family of Goodyear Rubber) – Akron, OH -This mansion is beautiful, stately, and designed way ahead of its time.

OREGON

National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, Baker City, OR - It is a very well done interpretive center with enough exhibits to fill the better part of a day.

SOUTH DAKOTA

Eyeof Needle.jpg (7550 bytes)

Custer State Park, north of Rapid City, SD is one of our favorite State Parks. Besides innumerable wild animals it boasts the largest herd of buffalo in America.  The scenery is just as outstanding, featuring rock formations such as the Eye of the Needle on the left.

Prairie Edge Trading Co. & Galleries – Rapid City, SD – It’s not just a store.  Their collection of Native American arts and crafts is superior to many museums.

TENNESSEE

Hermitage.jpg (12304 bytes)

Andrew Jackson’s home, The Hermitage, - Nashville, TN - has withstood the trials of time.  It’s elegance has been restored allowing visitors to see how one of our founding fathers lived during the birth of our nation.

Jack Daniel’s Distillery, Lynchburg, TN – You can smell it and see how its made but you can’t buy the sour mash sippin' whisky there.  It is a dry county.

TEXAS

Bayou.jpg (9182 bytes)

Bayou Bend – Houston, TX - is a mansion belonging to Ima Hogg.  It is filled with a priceless collection of American antique furniture.  The gardens and landscape are also a true work of art.  Make prior reservations for your tour you will love it.

Johnson Space Center – Houston, TX – "Houston, We’ve got a problem!" and a lot of success stories too.

Caverns of Sonora – Sonora, TX - Every trip of ours must include at least one cave tour so we have gone underground many times.  Low and behold the best of them all are these caverns, 8 miles west of Sonora, TX.  This Helicite butterfly is just one of the many beautiful pristine formations found in this underground museum. CaversSon.jpg (7782 bytes)

UTAH

Deadhorse.jpg (25335 bytes)

On your way to Canyonlands National Park from Moab, UT takes a quick detour to Dead Horse State Park.  The view of the canyon formed by the Colorado River is as beautiful as any seen in the national parks.

Kennecott.jpg (4580 bytes)

The Kennecott Copper Mine outside Brigham City, UT is the largest open pit mine in America.  The huge ore carriers dwarf standard sized school busses deep in the pit. (No link available)

VERMONT

Bennington Museum –Bennington, VT – I never liked Grandma Moses until I stood in a room full of her paintings. They were rough but effectively accurate.

VIRGINIA

Fifer.JPG (20758 bytes)

Colonial Williamsburg is a commercial park of restored buildings and shops brought to life by actors portraying townspeople and history makers of early Colonial days. We even voted for Virginia’s Independence during a re-creation of the separation from England.   The Drum and Fife Corps provided an apt finale to this historic day.

WASHINGTON

Grand Coulee Dam – Grand Coulee, WA – Stay for the light show.  Laser lights spread across the biggest screen you can imagine, the face of the dam.

I couldn’t pass up including one our favorite pictures of Mt Baker in Washington State.  The sun even shone that day.

MtBaker.jpg (9603 bytes)

Bill Speidel’s Underground Seattle – Seattle, WA – It's funny.  It's historical.   It's worth your time.

WEST VIRGINIA

Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, Beckley, WV –  Go underground with a retired miner and learn how coal miners dug out a living.

WYOMING

Buffalo Bill Historical Center – Cody, WY – It is four mind- blowing museums in one.  Included are outstanding exhibits of western art, firearms, Plains Indian arts and crafts and Buffalo Bill memorabilia.

Sunset.jpg (9194 bytes)

And as the Arizona sun sets on our journey, let me wish you Happy Trails.   I hope you have enjoyed this journey.  I would appreciate any comments you might have.
